It feels right to start this album with Nelson Mandela
This statue is outside the prison where he was released - only a 5 minutes drive from where we stayed in Pearl Valley
Our good neighbours from Iceland, Ruth and Kolli, invited us to stay in their house in Pearl Valley - wonderful premises
This is the view from our friends house in Pearl Valley - not bad!
We met good friends from our Spanish days in Stellenbosch. Here is Benni with Leif Frilund
It was great to meet Beggu and Leif, even if it was just for a short time.
We found a "candy" heaven. Here you could get all the dried fruit and nuts you could think off
We spent a lot of time in the club house at Pearl Valley to get online
A church in Franschhoek
Out and about in Franschhoek
The air was very humid so the girls had no control over their hair
Dora putting on her brand new African sandals
We drove past Townships like this for many km - very sad to see these conditions
People do their best with what they have. Electrical wires all over
Dora on the beach in Muizenberg
These little beach houses are so colourful and "S-African"
People were sunbathing and relaxing on the beach
With Kristinn, the son of our hosts in Simon´s Town
These little girls were dancing and singing
Simon´s Town is famous for the penguins that inhabit the beach
It is strange to see penguins in a warm climate - somehow we always connect them with cold climate
Better to be aware! This is a road sign you will not see in many places
We went down to Cape Point
Kristinn - such a beautiful boy
Some strange animal that Kristinn spotted
Dora and Kristinn loved to take photos of all the animals they saw
Dora getting a little assistance from her dad
Benni by the lighthouse at Cape Point
Lizards were a very popular model for Dora
On out way to Cape Point and Cape of Good hope we saw several Baboons
And Ostriches were running around wild as well
Cape of Good Hope - We (Gudrun and Benni) have a similar photo from 11 years ago
We made it :-)
Dora very close to some Ostriches
They were just minding their own business
Everywhere we drove, people were waling along side the roads
But in one place there were not people on the road, but Baboons running around and playing in the middle of the road
Dora at our Safari lodge
Looking very Safari like
We got very close to the animals
Very close to a Rhino
These Zebra babies were playing around
We just love the Giraffes
Such a special animal
Dora with her favourite animal
We even got pretty close to the lions
And we learned about the different animal prints - would be helpful if we got lost in the wild
After a perfect day
Gudrun and Dora on the Safari truck
We drove the Garden Route and stayed at Plettenberg Bay
Morning walk on the beach at Plettenberg Bay
We went sand boarding at Mossel Bay
Some of us only tried the stomach board
Dora tested both - equally fun
Benni far down - after a very fast slope
Gudrun loved to go down the slope sitting on the board
We had a wonderful time riding the Elephants
Dora got to ride "single" on the mother elephant
She went barefoot
Not really ready to let go
On our way up Table mountain
What a view from the top
We took time to enjoy the spectacular sunset
Sunset on Table Mountain
Seeing the sun set over Cape Town is something to remember
Dora with Cape Town in the back
Dora in front of Enza in the middle of one of the Townships. Enza: empowering women. An initiative that changes lives.
Cooking class at Enza
Ruth our host is doing wonders with her Enza initiative. Here she and Dora are showing dresses made from old shirts
The women are learning how to produce different products to sell
Bracelets in the making
We learned about Gravity lights that are a fantastic invention to be used in sheds were there is no electricity
Ruth helping to explain how to apply to get these lights - it is still a test project
Demonstrating how the lights work - simple, clever and very effective
Dora and Gudrun sat in on the demonstration with women from the Townships
Beside Enza is a kindergarten - the kids were all sleeping when we first came to visit
That little beautiful girl is an orphan - it was hard to walk away without being able to just bring her with
These girls came to the kindergarten after school and they were eager to have their photo taken
These little 8 year olds come to do their homework at Enza - Dora wanted to help out but they were rather shy
One of the little one´s was not as shy - he and Dora had a good time
They had a lot of fun
There do not seam to be any regulations regarding seat belts or how many people can be on one car - even on the highway
At the Biscuit Mill in Cape Town - A really cool place
Dora with Whitney - our very special friend and mother of Divando and Britney
Divando and Britney are two children that have a special place in our hearts and we are so fortunate to be able to follow their progress for years to come
